    Minor in Athletic Training

    Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who provide preventive services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

    The University of Alabama minor in Athletic Training is designed to create a pathway for students and prepare them for graduate programs in Athletic Training through classroom and clinical experiences. Students will also gain skills that will be valuable if interested in pursuing advanced training in other athletic health care fields.

    ​The minor in Athletic Training does not lead to eligibility to sit for the Board of Certification exam. 

    What Should I Major In?

    Any student with the necessary prerequisites and experiences are eligible to apply for Athletic Training Programs, including the UA MSAT program.Selecting an undergraduate major that will include the prerequisite course and content that will complement your masters degree in Athletic Training will be valuable in your professional preparation. Majors at UA that you may want to consider are:
    • Public Health with a concentration in Health Professions
    • Nutrition
    • Kinesiology​ with a concentration in Exercise Science 

    WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE MINOR?

    Didactic Education

    Students will enroll in coursework focused on Athletic Training and the wide variety of knowledge and skill that Athletic Trainers must possess.

    CLINICAL EDUCATION

    Students will have hands-on education learning skills to be implemented in a clinical setting. In addition, students will have clinical experiences as part of the coursework.

    PROFESSIONAL ADVISING

    Students will receive professional advising to prepare students for careers in Athletic Training. 

    UA Athletic Training Minor Requirements

    The UA Athletic Training minor requires 18 hours of coursework. Students must take ATR 257 as a prerequisite for the minor.
    • ​ATR 258: Clinical Fundamentals
    • ATR 272: First Aid and Safety
    • ATR 300: Foundations in Athletic Training
    • ATR 305: Clinical Biomechanics
    • ATR 312: Health Care Teams
    • ATR 405: Injury Psychology
    • ATR 432: Applied Performance Physiology
    • HD 203: Medical Terminology

    A 2.75 grade point average in the minor is required. Students that wish to minor in Athletic Training 
    must meet with the Athletic Training Academic Advisor before declaring the minor, and should meet with the advisor once per semester. For an appointment, please email Melinda Lake.
